BOO WHO?
(Thoughts from the Preschool)

October is a month of anticipation for children and adults alike. The weather changes, the trees put forth their most beautiful finery and the harvest is bountiful. This month of anticipation ends with a day of make believe and family time together. Costumes, staying up past your bedtime and an evening of candy overload are a dream come true.

We, adults, remember Halloween with fond memories of friendship and excitement. Handmade costumes and carved pumpkins come to mind. As adults, we should also remember that this can be a stressful and scary time, as well. Many toddlers are afraid of costumed figures and getting into a costume that parents spent time and /or money on may not be on their top ten list of fun activities.

At the Coop, we celebrate the harvest that God provides at this time of year. We spent a crisp October morning on a Westhaven Farms' hayride, selecting the perfect pumpkin. Pumpkins, apples, tomatoes, beans, squash and potatoes found their way to our table for dissection, use as painting tools and points of discussion.

October was also the month for talking about our fears. God's help in listening and helping us deal with these fears became an integral part of this discussion. That's a lesson that we all need to remember.

So, when October 31st knocks at your door, remember to celebrate God's gift of fall vegetables and happy children.
